Just follow the steps at www.qmailrocks.org.
It will allow you to setup the qmail right from the scratch.

I went through http://www.lifewithqmail.org/lwq.html#installation
and configured the Qmail.

when I had configured Sendmail earlier,i use to check through:
#telnet localhost 25

In case of Qmail to what port I should telnet to?

Even in case of Qmail you will telnet on port 25. This is because Sendmail and Qmail both are SMTP servers and SMTP uses port 25.
Life with qmail installation is lot manual that Qmailrocks.
But in the end both the procedures do the same thing.
