Login problems with XDMCP from a pre-RHEL-4 client to a RHEL-4 server running KDE

When running a chooser on a RHEL-3 (or earlier RedHat release) and then
clicking on a server running RHEL-4 and KDE (kdm) as its display manager, then
instead of getting a login window from the server I get the well known empty
X-screen - which times out after about 30 seconds and returns me to my chooser.

This has worked fine for me between all previous RedHat releases, all the way back
to at least RedHat-5.2 (using XDM at that time), so why does it not work with RHEL-4 ?

A few things that do work:

If the client is also a RHEL-4 machine, it works.
From a RHEL-4 client to a pre-RHEL-4 server, it also works.
This command works: X :1 -query "RHEL-4_server_name".
It also works if I use GNOME as the display manager on the RHEL-4 server
(but I don't want to change to GNOME as my display manager).

Does anybody know what is happening ?
