problem installing gentoo, on laptop

this started when i updated win 2000 to sp4..........long story short i'm installing ubuntu on it but wait i dont have 256mb of ram (192mb)so i can't even load up the installer window so i end up digging out my copy of gentoo. so gentoo boots up nice and quick, i get thru the setting it up to install and then it hangs when copying 20/100 (sys-devel/gcc-4.1.1) and after all this i'm willing to start calling around look for an old copy of windows.(but relly dont want to)

p3-650mhz
ram-192mb
HD-ide-12gb
it does have a dock where the combo drive, ethernet, power outlet,usb,ps/2,floppy is and i'm very sure it uses ide to connect the two

i'm using gentoo 206.1 live cd and would like to use gentoo more then ubuntu

Are you using the 2006.1 LiveCD installer or are you installing from Stage 3 using command line ?

I have tried using the installer (two versions) and have yet to make a successful installation due to one problem or another.

You might want to use the text version of the installer ... I think you can start it at the boot prompt.

I have always stepped back down to doing it the command line way. This has always worked for me.

I just installed 2006.1 on my Compaq Evo N400c:
PIII 700
192 MB ram
20 GB HDD
Dock w/ cd and floppy

I would suggest you drop down to the console prompt and follow the hand book.

There is also the possibility that the CD is bad and the installer could not read the file properly.

Did you run a checksum on the file after you downloaded the ISO ... and did you verify the CD after burning it ?

Go to one of the mirrors -> http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml

/releases/x86/current/livecd
there will be some ISO files and a Digest file
Open the Digest file in a text editor and it will have the MD5 and SHA1 checksum values

Download a MD5 or SHA1 checker ... example for Windows -> http://en.softonic.com/index.phtml?&...on=663&by=rank

This will show you if your ISO file is good.

When you burn the ISO your burning software should have an option to verify the disk.
