What is going wrong? Once wine is installed and you've tested it (type in
Code:
wine notepad.exe
- do you see a Notepad?

You should type in
Code:
 wine /path/to/program.exe
- if the path has spaces (as in /path to/program.exe) put the path in quotes.

Oh yeah - welcome to LQ

man, i must be mentally challenged - i can't even get notepad to open. i click on wine and it says: "wine needs a windows executable as a parameter!" below i type: wine notepad.exe

nothing happens

correction - got the notepad to work! yay, me!

I find that wine is best run from a terminal.

So, if your program is on your home drive, you would type
Code:
wine /home/name/directory/program.exe
if it's on your fat32 drive (if you have one), you would type
Code:
wine /mnt/fatdrive/"My Documents"/programs/name/program.exe
for example.

If it's something you use regularly, you can set up a shortcut on your desktop or in your menu.

so, linux was re-installed and i have downloaded the .exe file i want to install. however, when i attempt to use wine to install, i get this error:

Code:
err:virtual:map_image Standard load address for a Win32 program
(0x00400000) not available - security-patched kernel ? wine: could not load
'Y:\mtgodl2.exe' as Win32 binary
what am i doing wrong?

what kind of installer is it? if it's install shield you'll have to install dcom98.exe

look here. there's links to the dcom95.exe and dcom98.exe.

http://frankscorner.org

also has a pretty good list of what works in wine and how to get it to work.
