Music playback problems

Hi, Im new to linux i just installed it yesterday and love it so far but im having a few problems with music playback, The first problem is i cant listen to music cds playing from my dvdr drive it doesnt pick up any sound, i was wondering if i need to connect the audio cable thing to my dvdr drive. My other problem is when i rip cds with the 2 ripping programs and then play them back on xxms it seems to speed up and distort alot but i dont notice this at all in AlsaPlayer. Thanks

Yes you do have to have the audio cable connected from the "drive" to the sound card/device -you should also have to point the app at the device i.e. for kscd and grip I have to direct them to /dev/scd0 (bearing in mind that my cd player is a cdrw and mandrake calls it /dev/scd0 because of the scsi emulation in connection with disc burning - the system default is /dev/cdrom - and that could probably be made to work, but I don't know how), it's windows that picks the sound from a drive via the ide cable - but I've also read that the latest version of xmms, should be able to pick the sound from a "digital" device i.e. in /dev/dsp - though I haven't looked into this myself yet - I just read it somewhere.

Sorry, don't know anything about the second part of your question that's a new one on me!

regards

John

Well, when I put all my CD's on hard drive, the program ripped them to .Wav format then encoded them to .Ogg..........To me ogg sounds way better than mp3!! and then I configure mplayer to access the oggs......this is all done in Slackware.

Just for info, further to 320mb's comment, you could try grip - after all, it's main function is as a ripper, it just happens to be a fully functional audio cd player as well (and works under kde and gnome - see install disc's). Though I don't rip cd's, so I don't know what format they get ripped as - xmms will play ogg stuff, I regularly listen to the ogg stream from virgin.

Though you could also please one of our "much beloved" moderators - Acid_kewpie - and check out his app, it's called "acidrip" I understand that it's based on mplayer, and when I looked it up, it mentioned dvd, so I don't recall if it does cd's as well, or what format it rips to.

regards

John
