Music Playback on Ubuntu (Hoary)

Just recently switched over from Windows XP to Ubuntu and am having problems using RhythmBox and Totem to play .mp3's. Whenever I try to play them, it gives me the message:

RhythmBox say:
Error loading files into library.
There is no plugin installed to handle a MP3 file. file:'filename'

Totem says:
Totem could not play 'filename.mp3'.
Failed to open; reason unknown.

All the regular Ubuntu sounds work but no luck on music. Any suggestions?

An easy solution is to choose xmms, which worked better for me under Ubuntu, but I know that's not what you're asking. Some RhythmBox info is located here on the Ubuntu forums.

I had the same problem and just switched to xmms, which works fine.

Two related questions:

1. How can I change the default application for mp3 (and other) playback to xmms, rather than totem?

2. How do you play back an .avi video file in fullscreen mode on xmms?
