Try running this to create the link

ln -s /opt/googleearth/googleearth /home/myusername/Desktop/googleearth
What do you mean the "image links" disappeared? Do you mean they look different or what?
If you don't like running the code above, then right click on your desktop (if running somethine like gnome) and select "create launcher" then type the for the command "/opt/googleearth/googleearth"
There are many ways to do what you want.
