When I booted up my mandrake 10.1 box today I found that all my desktop icons had disappeared although the task bar was still there with icons on. I had spent the day before trying to compile/install ffmpeg and mencoder, and trying to install some windows apps under crossover office but with no joy.

I have looked in the Desktop folder and the *.desktop files still exist and on boot up you get a quick glimpse of the icons on the desktop before they disappear. Clicking the right mouse button also doesn't bring up a menu like it used to.

Any thoughts on what I need to do to get the icons and right mouse button functionality back?

Are you using KDE or Gnome?

I am using KDE 3.x.x - I am away at the moment so can't confirm exact version until the weekend.
