Links to CD-ROM drives disappeared from desktop

I am running Mandrake 9.1 and I have updated KDE to version 3.1.3 today. All went well, but the icons on the desktop which linked to the CD ROM drives, floppy, and ZIP have disappeared; instead links to the harddisks have been installed. I could hide those again in the dialogue in control center where you can set which icons to show and which to hide, but checking the icons for the 'lost' drives doesn't do anything (they are actually still checked).

I can access all drives through their mount points, it's just that the icons have disappeared. I have tried making symbolic links in my desktop directory, and they work, but they aren't the same thing; for instance the icon can't be changed (says something about not having rights to write to /desktop/Plextor/.directory, but I guess that means it would actually try tow write to .directory on the CD itself which of course isn't possible).

How do I regain (or make new) the icons which were there before? I have also tried right-clicking the desktop to make a short cut to the CD ROM drive but clicking that short cut creates an error 'drive could not be mounted - only root can do this'. OF course I won't log in to KDE as root just to access CD ROMs... :/

I'd appreciate any help with this.

Robin

Maybe you just set it to show mounted/unmounted devices, and not both. So when one switches state, its icon is removed. See the desktop behaviour configuration.

No, even when both are checked no icon is shown; neither does it matter whether there's a medium in the drive at startup or not.

I have just found a workaround insofar as I have created desktop icons which load konqueror with the drive in question as parameter. Apparently it works ok as long as there is something in the drive, I haven't tested it fully yet though. I'd still like to know how I could get the original icons back, if only for the sake of knowing how this works.
