Help my kubuntu 4.1 desktop disappeared !

Hi all,

I recently installed kde 4.1 on a new kubuntu box. I had installed some of my software and changed around some of the look/feel stuff (moving panels around, adding my software into kstart, etc).

I wanted to change my IP from a DHCP address to static. I 1st attempted to, through the kstart menu, start knetworkmanager. I could click the icon and nothing would happen. I attempted to re-install the knetworkmanger program. still no joy. Then I noticed a network icon on my bottom panel. I clicked it and sure enough it was running there the whole time. I navigated through the menus and changed from DHCP to my static IP. I then rebooted (now that I think about it I'm not really sure why I rebooted in the first place...). Now upon logging in I can only see my desktop and a single blank bar at the bottom of the screen. No kickstart menu, nothing on the bottom bar, my top that I had added is gone.

What did I do and how do I fix it?

Thanks,

Steve

If you can get to a terminal rename your ~/.kde4 directory.

Thanks for the reply. i can open konsole. I removed ~/.kde and ~/.kde4, and rebooted. when I logged back in there was a blank panel at the bottom of the screen. I thought my system was hosed. I played with that blank panel, and eventually removed it. Apparently my regular panel with the kickstart and all was sitting BEHIND that panel on another panel.

Thanks for helping figure this one out...

There are ~/.kde and a ~/.kde4 subdirectories. Moot point now. Glad it's OK.

My post #3 should have said 'I removed ~/.kde and ~/.kde4' not 'I removed ~/.kde and ~/.kde'; In the end I had to wipe the system and just go back to KDE3.x kde4.1 is not really usable at this point. It looks really good. I hope come January & 4.2 that the KDE Devs can get KDE4 to a stable and useable point.

Hewson, you may want to try openSUSE 11 for a usable KDE4.

Cheers
