well, i'm def new to linux.. i have a emachine w/ built in sound and installed a SB PCI 128.. installed Mandrake 10.0 official.. can't get sound to work.. tried the snd-ens1371 (ALSA) and the es1371 (OSS).. shows up as CT5880..
weird thing is when i boot using a Mandrake Move 1 cd the sound works fine.. it was set for OSS es11371....??? i don't get it...

Did you open your mixer and check that the output is not muted?

Mandrake 10.0 was the first Mandrake distribution to use the 2.6 kernel and hardware detection was somewhat limited. While I didn't have any problems with my SB 16 PCI (es1371 based) in 10.0, I'd recommend you try 10.2 (aka Mandriva LE 2005).

es1371 sounds like the old OSS sound driver
you want the ALSA sound driver
which is snd-es1371

go into the MCC
find harddrake and run it
click on the sound card
and run the config tool
and select the snd-es1371 driver

you'll need to turn it up
as it doesnt have the same output volume
as the windows version for that card

have you also disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS
that could be causing confusion for your OS

floppy
