Switched to ES1371 and now no sound OR joystick

Background: Have an HP Pavilion which has a riptide audio card. Worked great in 2.4 with drivers from linuxant but no drivers are around for 2.6 (and I don't want to go back to 2.4).

Bought an Aureal Vortex card. No luck Can't get sound at all...turns out lots of ppl have the same issue with this card. HOWEVER, my joystick using the gameport did work using /dev/input/js0.

Bought a Creative Labs Ensoniq ES1731. NOTHING! And what sucks even more is that the joystick doesn't work anymore. The file /dev/input/js0 isn't even there anymore!! What gives?

So I either

1. go back to the Aureal so I at least have a joystick but no sound
2. go back to kernel 2.4 but I don't really want to do that
3. Have someone help me figure out why my ES1371 isn't working which I'd prefer...I though this chipset was well supported in Linux.

TIA
p.s. I'm using FC3.

Well, I rebooted and all of the sudden sound works :-) I thought I had gotten away from the whole "just reboot" when I switched to Linux. Oh well.

However, the joystick still doesn't work. I modprobed "joydev" and "analog" and "mknod /dev/input/js0 c 15 0" but jstest still says "No such device or address".

Any ideas? I'm sooo close I can feel it!!! :-)
