Basic Acces given by root to user

Hi, I just created an account on my home-box, I am learning C, and when I compile the program, I cant bind it to a port, it's a simple timeserver like "clock". But I get the permission denied and I must switch to root. I must use chown I guess to give access to an user to allow him to play with sockets, but on what file?

You shouldn't need to, what port are you trying to use? The first few (thousand I think) are reserved for daemons etc. Use a higher number and then your user should be able to play with his sockets, no problem

Yeah the first 1024 ports can only be bound to by programs running as root and I don't think there's a way to change this. You should be able to bind to higher numbered ports just fine though.
