new user to IMAP, need basic help plz

squirrelmail requirements said i need IMAP, im not sure what package this is exactly, however I understand it's purpose. Im running RH9 and looked at my install.log file and it says it installed:

Installing imap-2001a-18.

so i assume i have Imap capabillities(?) i punch in www.mydomain.org/mail (the directory there i installed squirrelmail) and i get the login in screen... I try logging with with a username and password of a user of the system. and i get the following error:

Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost.
111 : Connection refused

I understand a lot of things.. IMAP however is entirely new to me

any pointers would be great. thanks.

chkconfig --list

and turned it on. I can now log in but i question weather or not things are set up to send mail to other ISPs n such...
