Using PLIP to connect windows XP to Mandrake 7.1

I have plip on my XP machine and I have edited by rc.local file on my Linux box to accomodate parallerl connections. I have created an 'Incoming Connection' for parallerl port on the XP box with the IP 1.0.0.0 through 1.0.0.1. I have set the parallel IP for the linnux box to 10.0.0.2. Whenever I try to ftp, or even ping, from the XP to the Linux it times out. Can anyone give me step by step instructions on making this work without going out and buying a hub? Any help would be appreciated.
