How do I connect to Mandrake 10 from Windows Server 2003?

Hello all,

I have 2 machines in this scenario. One machine running Windows Server 2003 and the other running Mandrake 10 Community. I am attempting to setup file sharing between the 2 machines using Samba 3.0.2a.

I have created a Linux user account and password on the Windows machine and I am able to browse all shares on the Windows machine from the Linux machine through Konqueror using the following url:

SMB://windowsmachinename/windowssharename

I have even made Linux desktop shortcuts pointing to the Windows machine shared folders and they work perfectly.

When I attempt to connect to the Linux machine from the Windows machine is where I am having trouble. I go through My Network Places on the Windows machine, I click on Entire Network > MS Windows Network, I see the correct workgroup name listed, I click on it, I see the Windows Server and I see the Samba (Linuxmachinename) listed, I click on the Samba listing and it asks for a Username and Password to access the Linux machine. I am not exactly sure what username and password to enter and where would I set that information up on the Linux machine? I have also tried mapping a network drive on the Windows machine to any of the shared directories on the Linux machine through My Computer, I see the workgroup listed and I see the Linux machine listed but there are no available shares listed. I have tried mapping to:

\\Linuxmachinename\linuxsharename

from the Windows machine and that doesn't seem to work either.

I'm sure there is a simple step I am missing. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

You need a linux user and a samba user of the same name and password. You can create a samba user with smbpasswd -a username.
good luck.
