Samba problems...
Hi,
I've set up a Samba share on my RH 7.1 box - I can connect to it using smbclient but when I try from Win2K/98 using net use or net view it just sits there until it times out...
I'm pretty sure its an authentication problem but not sure I understand the interaction of the smbusers file, the linux usernames and the usernames I use from Win2K.
It's definitely NOT a hosts deny type problem as I've already made sure the host is allowed access. My hunch is that it's authentication. Could be wrong of course, what do I know?!
Any ideas?
Cheers, BH

Did you add the users to the smbpasswd?

No, I couldn't quite figure that bit out. Could you explain what I need to do? (in noob-speak :-)

there are different windows regisrty hacks you can use, to do it a lower way, search google or something for
enableplaintextpassword
Alternatively you can make samba use more security by altering /etc/smb.conf:
encrypt password = yes
(i think).
And then using smbpasswd to define each users password. Bit drawn out for my liking really.
Alternatively, i'm pretty sure you can just reduce the share level of samba, from user to share, which really has very little differences other than security, which, when samba is restricted to a safe LAN, isn't too much of a concern.

Sorted
It couldn't route back to the Win2K box as there was no entry for it in /etc/hosts. Also I used the smbadduser command thus:
smbadduser user:user
... and then entered the passwords. Those two steps seemed to sort it.
Thanks all for your help... BH
