Samba problems.

I have installed Mandrake 9.1, then upgraded to 9.2 (server-level security, as I want to fun an FTP site). I want to set up my Linux directories so that my Windows PC can view/alter/delete them.

The samba-client-2.2.8a-13mdk, samba-common-2.2.8a-13mdk and samba-server-2.2.8a-13mdk packages are installed. However, when I got to Configuration -> Configure Your Computer, then choose Mount Points, then Set Samba Mount Points... I can do absolutely nothing except a "Search Servers" button, which it clicked, gives nothing. The button just changes to "Search new servers" (which also does nothing).

Damn, I know this is a newbie problem, but this is driving me insane. So much for me completely changing to Linux from Windows. Can't even get BitTorrent to work - even though it's installed from the installation CDs.

Any help would be appreciated...

Cheers,
Zombie13.

What you're trying to do in that dialog is to mount shares from an external server - since that machine -IS- the server, this isn't what you want.

You need to edit your sama config file to add some share. read the man pages and the documentation that came with samba (in /usr/share/doc, most likely).

Read also the samba-related HOWTOs on
tldp.org

As for your bittorrent problem, could you describe it?
What you need to do to get bittorrent working is associate a filetype - application/x-torrent, with the .torrent extension - with the btdownloadgui program in your installation directory. For me, I just instructed my browser (opera) to open .torrent files with that program - it works just fine. I experience some weirdness with the display - certain areas of the window don't update or become illegible - but the download continues unhindered.

Thumbs up

Excellent, I'll take a look at that when I get home.

My BitTorrent problem was posted here. I'll associate the .torrent files when I get home too. If I can get these 2 things working, then goodbye to my Windows machine as my main PC.

Many thanks,
Zombie13.

If your using 9.2 then webmin was loaded. All you have to do is now install swat and you will have a great tool for configuring samba. Its run from a browser just like webmin. Its the simplest way to config Samaba. I use it to bring up samba for clients I have. Works great!!! Give it a try.
