Question Problems with Samba

Well I have set up and configured Samba in RedHat 9. I have started and checked the status and they are both ok. I have gone into smb://athome my workgroup and yes there is my windows XP desktop machine...

However when I click to access this machine, after about a minute I get the error

"Couldn't display "smb://desktop" because no host "desktop" could be found. Check the spelling is correct and that your proxy settings are correct."

And when I go to my windows machine...I don't even see the linux box

I wonder if anyone could shed some light on what I need to do next?

A few ideas:

- try to enter an IP address instead of netbios name in smb:// dialog
- try to use smbclient instead of graphical interface ('smbclient --list hostname' to see available shares on that pc)
- cant see linux from windows? Are u sure firewall isnt blocking samba ports (138,139)? Did u set workgroup and netbios name in smb.conf? Can u access linux machine when entering its ip instead of netbios name?

ok....can now connect to the XP machine from linux.....problem.....forgot my firewall *sighs*...thanks for jogging my memory muah....

and now I can see My linux machine from XP, but get this error

\\localhost is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission.

You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. Go to system in Control panel to change the computer name and try again

Now I assume this is to do with the machine name and not the actual log in names. But why would this matter when my XP machine is desktop and my linux machine is redhat

localhost means the machine u r sitting at. So if u wrote it on XP then u cant access your XP's shares from your XP machine (which doesnt necessarily has to be a problem)

actually localhost is in refrence to the linux machine...in network neighbourhood it comes up as redhat (localhost)

The setting in network config on the redhat machine still have the default or

DNS
hostname : localhost.localdomain
dns search path : localhost

HOSTS
IP : 127.0.0.1
name : localhost.localdomain
aliases : localhost

Fedora & XP workgroup setup

I have the same problem. I am setting up a network between 2 xp's and 1 fedora. All computers can ping to all other computers.

The xp's work perfect back and forth.

Bring up network neighborhood and the all computers are listed. But no matter what, the linux computer is always listed as xxxxxxx (localhost). Currently the description is "samba server". Double click on the samba server(localhost) and I get:

\\localhost is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission.

You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. Go to system in Control panel to change the computer name and try again

I set static ip addresses. I have changed my network config to:
address: 169.254.0.1
hostname: server.labnet
aliases:

XP computers:
address: 169.254.0.2
hostname: lab1.labnet
aliases:

address: 169.254.0.3
hostname: lab2.labnet
aliases:

I did notice that when I look at the /etc/samba/lmhosts , all it shows is 127.0.0.1 localhost

No matter what, I continue to get the duplicate name error

Any ideas?
