How to resolve the domain names

I have a gateway server from which I will be accessing number of other servers having different domain names. How I can access the servers without giving the full domain name from gateway?

For example..I have to two servers A and B having domain names A.office.com B.outofoffice.com.Now I am accessing them like

> telnet A.office.com or
> telnet .outofoffice.com

I want to access them by just giving > telnet A or telnet B

Adding them to /etc/hosts would be the easiest way to do it.

Depends on the number of hosts and the change frequency. A DNS server might be useful in larger networks.

There is another way to get this done ... if and only if the hostnames for all the domains are disjoint: Add search statements in /etc/resolv.conf for the different domains.
