unable to resolve domain names

I have Slack 9.1
(new install, not using BIND)

If I setup up my eth0 card with a static IP address I am not able to resolve domain names but I can ping web sites using their IP address.

However, if I change eth0 to boot dhcp I can resolve domain names with no problem???

My resolve_conf settings stay the same whether I boot static or dhcp.

example of my resolve_conf (x = my namerserver IP)

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

any ideas?

Do you have a separate DHCP Server that is providing you with a DNS address? Is your /etc/hosts file setup properly?

Now everything is working! All I did was to turn off dhcp and boot eth0 static this mourning. I did this several times last night and static would not resolve domain names. Really weird!

Thanks for the reply

I have this EXACT same problem.
But mine is still broke after 2 days of trying to fix it.
Could someone please help me?

My resolve file has

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

of course I have the real IPs in there.

Thanks for any help.

I found the answer

Pablo,

I found the problem.
It was so simple.
All I needed to do was put the localhost IP 127.0.0.1 in as one of the nameservers.
It works fine now.

Thanks for your reply.
I was going crazy for such a simple fix.

Hi everyone,

I'm having this same problem. I set up with DHCP and I'm able to ping domains fine, but if change to static I can only ping by IP address. I tried putting 127.0.0.1 as one of my nameservers but that did not work. Please help! I just installed slackware 13.1

Duh when I restarted rc.inet1 (from DHCP to Static) it cleared out my DNS servers! I just added my default gateway as a nameserver and I'm browsing fine
