Newbie here...so please do consider!!!
My laptop is the TOSHIBA SATELLITE P10-874.
It consists of P4 3Gh, 512 RAM, 60GB HD,NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5600 64MB RAM, DVD-RW 2x, 15,4 WXGA (wide monitor,1280x800),FIR, i-link, SD, LAN, TV-out, WiFi-Antenna.
I recently have installed SuSe 9.2 professional on a dual-boot mode with Windows XP professional (sp2).All went OK with the installation process, including the suse on-line update (Ethernet connection-adsl), but as a final result I hear no sound, the resolution is 1024x768 (instead of the functional 1280x800), and the ALPS touch pad is not responding...The sound card is the classic REALTEK AC 97 circuit.
The problem with the resolution remains, even after the installation of the nvidia driver for linux (through the suse update), and at the present resolution, I can't see the fonts clearly.
This is the first time I'm using the Linux operating system, and even though I like the new environment, it is quite a shame that I can't get it to work as I need to!!!
If there is anyone who can help me, please do respond!!!!!!!

I installed 9.2 SUSE on a Toshiba Satellite A65 back in January; I've left many breadcrumbs (POSTs) on this site for all the Toshibans who follow in my footsteps. 9.2 had a problem with installing dual-boot w/GRUB that you didn't seem to get like I did, so you must have made the XP partition small enough that the bug didn't appear.

The second problem I had that you also encountered looks like it's an "outta-da-box" error with the SUSE distro -- it doesn't sense the monitor resolution correctly. I let YAST finish the SYSGEN rather than try to monkey with the video resolution, then after the reboot I used SAX2 to reconfigure the video resolution to what I wanted. SAX2 has a nice test mode; I was able to preview the higher resolution correctly, so I let it change it in my configuration.

I also noticed another problem with the fonts when scrolling; they were fuzzy & not always correctly rendered on the laptop XGA screen. This problem I fixed by upgrading the kernel to the latest version from an RPM mirror site. I downloaded the newer kernel on my other Win98 box, burned it to a CD, and installed it using YAST. Once the kernel update was completed, I logged onto the Internet and did the YOU (YAST On-Line Update) & got a whole lot more updates. After all kernel & online updates were applied, I finally had correctly rendered fonts, plus a lot of minor problems fixed.

Well, I can't seem to thank you enough Moonrover!!!
You assume correctly about the XP partition size...I 've set it to 15 GB.
For linux SuSe it's 10 GB, and the rest is 29,5 for my files.
Now, about the screen resolution, here's the story...
Since I had NO LUCK finding any new driver capable of fixing the issue, I went on to YAST and selected a Toshiba Model monitor from it's providing list, as my monitor!Guess what....?It WORKED!!!!Funny, isn't it?
Next, I rebooted only to find that the sound card is configured the same as my monitor.....Talking about "the day of the Weird"....I don;t know!Maybe it was, from the beginning my fault...who knows?!?
As for the touch pad...somehow I've managed to get it to work by selecting ONE-BY-ONE all the mice, from YAST's model list.
Now I'm experiencing trouble with the KDE crashing all the time (something about a Signal8 issue...I don't know..yet!) but don't worry, I'll figure it out...

Bootup with NOACPI and the crashes may go away. I had to generate my system that way to make it boot up reliablely. That's what stopped the problem on my system, if you don't have some other problem, this may work. Look at all the other POSTs on the ACPI problems with SUSE LX 9.2 & laptops.

With ACPI enabled, my laptop was crashing in KDE when initializing the peripherals ("the spinning globe icon").

Hi. Similar problem & question:

I have a Toshiba 1405 w/ the ALi M1535 soundcard. I can't seem to get that to configure, even in Yast. The module listed is "M1535(D)" which errors if I try to use it.

Also, do I need to partition an external hard drive so that it can be read properly, or am I missing a driver? My external Western Digital on USB shows up as an "unmounted hard disk partition" and stalls when I try to access it (/dev/sda1). When I did a test run and installed SuSE on a desktop (I found in the garbage) I was able to just plug my external in w/o any problem.

I have not gotten to configuring the soundcard yet, so hopefully someone else can help you out on this one. I'll pop a CD in tonight @ home & see if it even works on Linux. Maybe someone else has more information for you on this one.
