Win TV GO-Plus problem with channels

OS: OpenSuse 10.1

I have Comcast (non-digital) and I can't seem to find any of the channels, even though the system finds the card fine. I've tried NTSC, Pal, etc, in Yast, but nothing seems to work.

Funny, if you would have looked I posted the exact post you just made a few hours ago, same distro and everything XD

I believe our problem is the same, and I believe that problem is that the tuner is not being given the correct number. Try the command

Code:
dmesg | grep bttv
and post it here. If it says anything about tuner=4, then we're in business. I believe the correct command to fix this may be

Code:
modprobe tuner type=*tuner type number*
Given that we both have the same card, I also believe that the tuner type number is 39.

Sorry I can't be more help, I'm at my moms house on her computer and won't be back on mine (to try all this) until tomorrow. Please tell me how it works out. Also, what viewing program are you using?

Okay, well, I'm getting a little further than I was, but still no dice.
I did what you said, and I got a whole bunch of "tuner not set", but now I have two devices under kdetv. When I click on the other, it is showing me three green lights in the setup window, instead of just 2 (the outer ones, the inner one is red on the first one), takes a little longer to scan, and even though it isn't showing any channels, it is showing me a green screen, which is an improvement from the nothing (or static) I was getting
BTW, I'm using Comcast analog.

Yup, we're in the same bind. The exact same thing happens to me under kdetv. If I open it up, and select "television" and "ntsc" ill get some fuzz, then ill scan and no channels will show up, and I'll start it again and all 3 lights will be green. Very weird indeed, and the fact that you got the barrage of "tuner not set" messages as well is making me more and more confident that I have the correct answer.

It's beyond me to make this thing work, I can experiment all I want but if it works from that then its from dumb luck. Hence why I came here looking for an answer.

Lets just wait and see if anyone can help us, If you happen to get this to work, make sure you post back here.

Code:
modprobe bttv card=10 type=39
try that as well.

Well, I did it, and now I got it to at least show the channels when I told it to disable them. unfortunately, kdetv also crashed because of it.

One step at a time I guess :-/

So when you say "when I told it to disable them." You mean channels correct? Run kdetv from the shell, and pipe the errors into a file, like:

Code:
kdetv 2> log.txt
and post it here, we'll see why its crashing hopefully.

Maybe that's a kdetv specific problem...what about xawtv, tvtime(I hear thats the best) or another? What problems do they produce if any? While you test that out, i'll scan your log there.

I'll check, I don't know if this is a kdetv problem or a Suse Problem. I mean, Yast says that it recognizes it, but it just won't pick up the channels (cable or broadcast, and what's that cable-hsr I keep seeing)

I can tell you it's not a SuSE problem, and personally, I don't think YaST is worth shit, you would do better to do everything by hand in my book.

Anyway, im glad to see your picking up channels. Try:

Code:
scantv
pick ntsc and the type, and let it start picking up. If it actually picks channels up then we're in business, it's just a kdetv problem. At that point you could just use a different application and be happy or pursue help with kdetv.

Keep me updated.

It's not picking up channels.

BTW, do I use us-cable, us-cable-hbr, or us-bcast?

I'm actually using an old-fashioned "rabbit-ear" style antenna, and im using us-bcast, I assume you would use us-cable.

So it appears we're still stuck in the same place we have been then...we'll have to figure out why kdetv is crashing and make that bastard work. Which I really can't do right now, because as I said I don't have access to my computer until tomorrow...I assume it will crash for me as well though, considering everything else has been the same so far, so when I experience it first hand, maybe I can figure it out better.

We're both stuck here, any contribution by a third party is welcomed with gusto!

Fixed

I finally figured out how to fix this problem

The whole thing was in the tuner. I realized (or rather, somebody pointed out to me), that the tuner on the card was set to 4, meaning no tuner. So, I found the tv file in the modprobe.d directory, changed the value there, did a reboot, and voilla! It works. True, the picture right now is black and white, and pretty crappy, so I'll have to do some experimentation, but at least I know the card works.

What is the content of the tv file in modprobe.d? What did you put in there? I remember when I looked at it it was blank...

From my tv file in the modprobe.d directory
alias char-major-81 videodev
options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1
options bttv tuner=39

# YaST configured TV card
# Uog3.jkuH1hutKMA:User-Defined TV Card
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
alias char-major-81-1 off
alias char-major-81-2 off
alias char-major-81-3 off
