Run alsamixer and see if the channels are muted.

I know your using A GUI distro but this will help . open a console and type sudo alsaconfig then click the default it lands on and wala you up and running. after that you can use the mixer programe to turn up the volume alsaconfig will find your card and load the driver all you have to do is click ok. you must in bios setup set to none plu and play or non-windows O/S sence you are using kde the use your control senter to check out the sound.

Try "sudo /usr/sbin/alsaconf". Also try running "locate alsaconf". If you don't see an error message about needing to run "updatedb", and it can't find alsaconf, then you may need to install it.
