Question sound issue

I am running ASP linux- I am running the Gnome desktop. All sound files are installed. In the control center / sound, I can play a test sound and hear it fine. However, Gaim, evolution, and others proggiez will not play sound. I am using ASP 9.0, and my card is a VIA AC97 onboard. Thx in advance for any assistance.
