/sbin/chkconfig --list alsa
alsa 0: off 1: off 2: on 3: on 4: on 5: on 6: off
and
/sbin/chkconfig --list sound
sound 0: off 1: off 2: on 3: on 4: on 5: on 6: off
I dont have the /sbin/chkconfig command (running Slackware 9.0 currently) but just looking at the output, i assume it has something to do w/the various run levels. Loading the modules manually was the next thing I was going to suggest .. you can do it like this :
# modprobe nameofmodule
I suggest reading the man pages first as there are alot of really good options regarding modprobe.

ok, now, hexbit, when i went through changing the sound I/O method, i got (i think) some static. and now suddenly i'm not getting "can't open dev/dsp" or "can't open device" errors. i'm worried that maybe in my fervor i accidnetly clicked "do not show message again"? maybe i'm getting too pessimistic here.
anyways, anyone have any ideas of what to do next?
hey, i'm having the same problem as you guys... i've got slackware 9.0, and whenever i try to play something i get the message "device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)".
i checked lsmod, and found that i have soundcore loaded, but nothing else. i tried doing "modprobe ac97_codec", and it worked ok, and then i tried "modprobe i810_audio", but i got errors. i don't know what driver i'm using, like Alsa or OSS. i'm pretty sure, though, that i'm using an "aRts" soundserver. i can supply whatever info you need, so just ask.
