another thing i've noticed, dunno if this matters or not

is that under information->sound in the control center

it says:

Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.9.2 emulation code)
Config options: 0

Installed Drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
--- no soundcards ---

Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

so, maybe i should somehow enable them? but how?

what does it mean when you get this:

Code:
/sbin/chkconfig --list alsa
alsa 0: off 1: off 2: on 3: on 4: on 5: on 6: off

and

/sbin/chkconfig --list sound
sound 0: off 1: off 2: on 3: on 4: on 5: on 6: off

maybe i could somehow load the modules in manually? i was rooting around the kernel folder and they're there, they're just not loading?

I dont have the /sbin/chkconfig command (running Slackware 9.0 currently) but just looking at the output, i assume it has something to do w/the various run levels. Loading the modules manually was the next thing I was going to suggest .. you can do it like this :

# modprobe nameofmodule

I suggest reading the man pages first as there are alot of really good options regarding modprobe.

jbd 38972 2 [ext3]

and now i seem to have loaded the right modules.

ok, now, hexbit, when i went through changing the sound I/O method, i got (i think) some static. and now suddenly i'm not getting "can't open dev/dsp" or "can't open device" errors. i'm worried that maybe in my fervor i accidnetly clicked "do not show message again"? maybe i'm getting too pessimistic here.

anyways, anyone have any ideas of what to do next?

Can you play anything through xmms? Mp3s, wavs, midi files? Does anything play now?

yeah, xmms will "play" mp3 files without an error message and the equalizer bar moves around like its playing, but there is no sound.

hey, i'm having the same problem as you guys... i've got slackware 9.0, and whenever i try to play something i get the message "device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)".
i checked lsmod, and found that i have soundcore loaded, but nothing else. i tried doing "modprobe ac97_codec", and it worked ok, and then i tried "modprobe i810_audio", but i got errors. i don't know what driver i'm using, like Alsa or OSS. i'm pretty sure, though, that i'm using an "aRts" soundserver. i can supply whatever info you need, so just ask.
