sound card help ES1978 Sound Card - maestro driver

Hi, this is a compaq Armada laptop, which has a ES1978 Sound Card which uses the maestro driver. It has been auto detected on every distro i have tried. I am now using Kanotix with a 2.6.9 kernel. It did not automaticlly detect the sound card, so how would i go about configuring this. I ran 'modprobe maestro' which loaded but still did not give me sound. Thanks for your help.
