Radeon 9700 pro

I'm running mandrake 10.0 and I have a radeon 9700 pro. I've tried ati.com and tried downloading their Drivers, and I tried installing them, but then X wouldn't load. So every time I boot up my computer, i have to type in my username & pass in the terminal, and type 'startx' to load X. I'm a noob, and I need help. Thanks.

In the file /etc/inittab, there should be a line that says:
id:3:initdefault:
Change it to
id:5:initdefault:
This sets the default runlevel to 5.
3 - Multi-user terminal mode with networking
5 - Graphical user interface with networking
