Hello all, I am having trouble finding how to stop the desktop manager in LXLE and KDE.. I can find info about how to install nvidia drivers, but not how to stop the DM.. /etc/init.d/kdm stop doesn't seem to work for me with KDE, and I can't seem to find anything related LXLE x server termination.
I think I have most of the other info needed, to install Nvidia non-free...just need to stop X to do it proper. Thanks for any help.

Hi...
Welcome to the forum
I've never needed to do this to install Nvidia's driver...ever. If you're using Kubuntu, probably the easiest way to install the driver is just bring up "jockey," (should be in "Preferences"--->"Additional Drivers,") and install it from there. It will first do a search and then you can choose which driver version to install.
If that doesn't work you can always go through your package manager (I can't remember what KDE or Kubuntu uses,) and install the driver that way. Just search for "Nvidia" and choose the driver. I've done this before using Synaptic.
Hope this helps....

Well, I was running LXLE, but after installing Nvidia drivers and rebooting to a blank screen, I decided to try the latest Netrunner (15) as it has the new Plasma 5 desktop and I have been waiting for it since I heard about it anyhow.I haven't tried yet to get anything (Nvidia drivers) going yet, as I hear that wayland might be just around the corner, and might be better? for Nvidia cards and such...I could be pipe dreaming, but I'm willing to wait a little to see if wayland is going to replace xorg.
I would guess that by the time I have this Nvidia thing figured out, wayland will probably replace X and it will all be moot.
At least I'm getting real good at installing Linux

To stop KDM you should probably try:
Code:
sudo service kdm stop
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Wayland as the NVIDIA support isn't there yet (that I've heard of) and isn't guaranteed to be any time soon.
As an aside, I would recommend using apt-get or aptitude to install the drivers rather than getting the NVIDIA .run filre from their website unless your card is very new and not yet supported by the driver in your distribution.
I'm getting pretty familiar with synaptic, and am wondering if a package can be marked for removal(like maybe nuveau) during say maybe an Nvidia package instal?
