Installing nvidia drivers from nvidia website on mepis 3.3

I can't install the nvidia-glx package from apt because I have a 802.11g card and so far there aren't any linux drivers (at least I don't think so). When I booted into Windows and then downloaded the linux nvidia drivers from the nvidia website and then tried to run the installer under linux, the installer gave me two options:

Get a precompiled driver kernel that matches my 2.6.10 kernel from the Internet

--or--

Compile a driver kernel for my 2.6.10 kernel

So, without Internet, I naturally chose the second option. But when I did, it said that it couldn't find the kernel source tree and then the installation failed. Any tips on how to get the source tree fixed? Did anyone manage to install the nvidia drivers from the nvidia website? Is there any alternative installation that doesn't use the Internet during installation?

Any help appreciated!

P.S. Is it necessary to shutdown x server before i install the drivers?

yes, like the install instructions tell you, you need to shutdown X before you can install the drivers.

what kernel version are you running ?
and what kernel-source version do you have installed ??

either you havent installed the kernel source code, or you installed a versiob which does not match your running kernel version.

There will be a package on one of your install CD's called Kenrel-source-2.6.10......rpm
install it.

you will also need a compiler (gcc) installed, its all under the Developemnt tools of the fedora package installer.

wrong advice

First let me say that Mepis is a variant on Debian (testing/unstable branch).
It does not use rpm it use .deb files for software installation.
I am new to Mepis but I can tell you that from what I understand, the kernel is different from the standard Debian kernel.
This mean that any module or driver that needs to modify the kernel for Mepis can cause problems. (This is the way I understand it.)
I am searching now to see if there is an easy way to get Nvidia drivers for Mepis, if I find it I will post it here. Try this post it will help Nvidia and Mepis

You answered a ? but not the one he asked. Mepis was the subject not Fedora.
