First let me say that Mepis is a variant on Debian (testing/unstable branch).
It does not use rpm it use .deb files for software installation.
I am new to Mepis but I can tell you that from what I understand, the kernel is different from the standard Debian kernel.
This mean that any module or driver that needs to modify the kernel for Mepis can cause problems. (This is the way I understand it.)
I am searching now to see if there is an easy way to get Nvidia drivers for Mepis, if I find it I will post it here. Try this post it will help
