Hi,
I would remove the laptop battery entirely, leave it out. Plug in the AC adapter then attempt to boot the system. If the battery is at fault then you could not boot with it in along with AC.
If it now boots then replace the battery. When booting, pay attention to the screen. Do you see a slight quiver at first? If so then you will need to open the case to short the CMOS battery jumper to clear the CMOS. Just removing the cell will not always clear the CMOS. Sometimes the CMOS battery is soldered in (pigtails) for laptops. Go to the Dell site and get the manual. You can reference the case screws to remove. Be careful to note which screws go where. You can use a piece of duct tape to lay the screws out on the sticky side to keep track of what goes where.
If you happen to have a 1501 with the Turion64x2 then the system should have shutdown when you got a over temp.
BTW, when you replaced the CPU heatpipe be sure to apply compound uniformly. Do not use too much, small thin layer applied, you can use a single edge razor blade to spread a thin even layer for the heat-pipe. Do not over tighten the heat-pipe mounting.
Good luck!
