ATI Radeon 9600XT native xfree86 driver

Through some advice from another person, I decided I wanted to try and get the ATI driver that comes with XFree86 to work, as opposed to the proprietary ATI driver. I got the driver to work in the 2D sense. Unfortunately I am not able to get the 3D acceleration work, which I'm told is possible. I've uncommented the "glx" and "dri" lines in XFreeConfig file. Which is about as far as I could get due to the lack of info on this particular driver.

it is true that you can use XFree86 ati drivers, but the proprietery give a noticibly better performance rate, and there are tons of good tutorials to install them. Its not that difficult actually. As to how to use the XFree ones, I have no idea.

Sorry, but arkamir is right. The Xfree Radeon drivers are terrible. You're really better off with the ATI binaries. They're a pain in the ass to install, but if you can get them working they're pretty OK.

Maybe I forgot to mention I "Do not want to use the proprietary drivers". I know how to use them but they do not work with XF86 4.4 yet.
