ati driver installer, radeon 9600, xfree86 4.3, suse
So I'm new to linux and I would like to know how to run the ati driver installer which I downloaded from ati.com. It downloads as a binary file and the graphical programs doesn't start. I'm green so if you could help out in lame man's terms that would be nice.
file in question is; ati-driver-installer-8.18.8-i386.run
from link : support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27
linux Dist: SuSe v 10, kernel 2.6.13-15 default
I downloaded XFree86 4.3. That took a while, firefox was thinking it was a real player file. Konqueror worked though.
if anyone can help me I would really be greatful.

Follow the install guide on my website at http://www.cosmicpothole.com/Linux/ati.php. I specifically learned on SuSE too, so the guide will be perfectly suited.
However, you first need to get the XOrg 6.8 fglrx driver and delete the XFree86 4.3 as SuSE 10 uses XOrg not an XFree version. Then just follow the guide and let me know how it went.

ati setup using info from Cosmic Pothole
So this information is nice, but apparently I'm so green at this that I can do a couple of the step that you reqiure.
I get stuck at checking prerequisites > AGPGART
when I type in the command ls /lib/modules/'uname-r'/kernel/drivers/char/agp
I get bashed with no such file or dir.
I though that maybe the " 'uname-r' " means enter your user name here so I tried that with the usr name "root", mine "mcvrwc", and linux.
all came up with thw same error.
also when you mentioned that I should not be using XFree86... and instead use X.Org 6.8 I went into YaST > software managment > search > XFree86
I found that there was already <filename> xorg-x11 installed. Technical Data -- verson 6.8.2-100.2
Does this mean I shouldn't install the download from ATi.com? I've already downloaded it but haven't installed yet.
I really am thankful for your help.

"ls /lib/modules/'uname-r'/kernel/drivers/char/agp"
for me is " ls /lib/modules/redshirt/kernel/drivers/char/agp" You can't use your full name, just the shortname(Red Shirt is my full, redshirt is my short)... if you want though, you can browse to the /lib/modules and see what is there, then pick your user name or whatever, then do "ls /kernel/drivers/char/agp".
You have Xorg 6.8.2, which means when you download from the ATI webpage, you get the "ATI Driver Installer" and the "XOrg 6.8" fglrx installer, both from the download section on the same page. You have 4 choices for fglrx installers, XFree 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3, and XOrg 6.8. Being on SuSE 10, means you have XOrg 6.8. Basically they are the same kind of deal, just forked from a different tree for licensing and other reasons.
Does that help?
