Did you compile the alsa sound system in your kernel?
If so are your sound drivers modules or built right in the kernel?
I have had to sometimes build the alsa drivers in the kernel to get it to go. Other times only modules worked. (I don't get why.) Just a few things to think about. I hope this stuff helps.

hi, i just want to know if this How To, would work with a Radeon 9200PCI 128MB card, i use Red Hat 9 kernel 2.4.20-8. I've been trying to make 3d acceleration to work for months with no luck. I've seen in some sites that fgl drivers does not support PCI Radeon cards. please tell me if thats true, so the nightmare can stop, i would just throw this damned card away...
sorry that wasnt any help, see i already did all the stuff like installing drivers and compiling the agpgart it all works fine, but when i run glxinfo, i always get direct rendering:no, and its driving me insane i have tried so many stuff like chaging chip ID and using the ForcePCIMode 'yes', but always the same problem no dri, i once installed mandrake 10 on my system, dri worked with the vesa drivers not verry good, but it said direct redering:yes i got like 250fps top i know that sucks, but when i installed the divers from ATI.com, it when back to direct redering: no
im almost dure that is because my card is a PCI version of the Radeon 9200, but maybe theres someone out there that was able to make it work, one never knows
i would like a comfirmation if it doesnt work or that it works, so i can keep on fighting, i love ATI but if this doesnt work ill never buy a ATI card again
i know Nvidia really cares about they're customers and they atleast make some decent drivers that works on every card unlike ATI... Thankss
Sorry that post was for the other guy. I would buy an Nvidia card. I love my 5900XT it runs great in Linux I used a radeon 9700 for a bit w/ Linux and it worked but the performace was crummy. So even if we get it working with the card being PCI it will be SLOW. I am sorry but that just came to me. (No UT 2003 or UT 2004) Youo could look around the rage3d/linux forums those folk are the best at this stuff.

Why in the love of myself are you using Linux as a gaming platform?
( I will probably get banned for this or something but still )
Windows is much easier... I reinstalled windows 2 days ago, in less then 1 hour and I could run every single game without trouble. I have vmware running for Linux and stuff. I got one prob with that though. I have Linspire ( debian based ( i think ) )installed on it but I cant start X. The videocard isnt supported or something. The prob though is that my own videocard ( ATI Radeon 9100 ) IS supported but the virtual vmware bitches a bit. I don't know what specs vmware uses as a monitor and as a videocard. I got as far as configuring it using xf86config... which is actually pretty far for a total linux n00b as myself... only prob is that it still doestn work =P...
put DC++ a ISO-file Nero burning rom and windows xp pro into one function... you do the math...
True that it is fun to puzzle with computers sometimes but I also think it is fun to be able to reinstall your computer and everything you need on it in a matter of half-hours instead of actually working on it when you dont have the time.
Windows also requires some puzzeling from time to time when you need to do something more advanced on it though. it is not as if it is all ready from install....
One might argue that the most easy OS/completeness actually is the best OS ;-)... a arguement that not many hardcore linux users agree on.
