Thumbs up 3D Acceleration in Linux

Which graphics card should I get if I want a driver to support 3D acceleration. I've heard that nVidia's drivers are very good, but are closed source. ATI's drivers are open source, but 3D support is only available for Rage cards at the moment -- i.e. no Radeon.

What comments do you have about this?

(Will be using RH or MDK)

I got an Nvidia card and the driver work great. Why do you care if they are closed source?

Mdk 9 + nVidia
Mdk PowerPacks should come with the full drivers already installed, normal Mdk has generic drivers which you just upgrade in 1 min flat.

Fortunately nvidia has been very nice and is a reputable enough company that many people will accept a closed source driver from them.

Would you accept a closed source mouse driver from Microsoft??

open source = one of the main reasons to why you should use Linux ;D

If you search the boards there are actually people getting the radeons working!

Cheers, Klod!!!

I have a Radeon 9000 Pro running in Slack 9 quite well. Enjoying ut2k3, Quake 3 and many other games on my linux box now. You can go nVidia or ATI really, nVidia was easier to set up, though I had to reformat after doing it to get the ATI drivers working. Just a matter of preference, and I prefer ATI.

I have an old Radeon (7200 I think) and 3D support works just fine on the thing.

I recently downloaded Army Ops for linux and I find that I get very poor performance. I am running a 2100+, 512 pc2700 RAM and a 9000pro. Is this another game optomized for nvidia or are the ATI drivers just not as good maybe? It appears to be the lighting the slows things down, I tried turned down lightmap and such but it didn't help much. I also tried multiple resolutions as well as the other options.
