sound only works on CD player?

When my machine boots up I see the following line-

loading sound module (viacxxx_audio) [OK]

Problem is that I have sound when I use CD player but no sound on Mplayer or Xmmx or anything like that. I have checked to make sure that nothing is muted in the mixer or anything like that and I have tried all the output options in the applications with no results. If Linux just didn like my soundcard would I still have CD player sound? The soundcard is built into the board and it is a VIA chipset. I tried to run sndconfig but it detects the card but then locks up when it tries to play the sound sample, and I dont hear anything. Any ideas where I should look here?
