What is the exact package you want to install?

What is the exact command you are using?

Well...my first and still my foremost problem is that my Kpackage module has crashed on me. I have posted previous messages on as to what it entales...
And since I am a newbie...I am still learning terminal RPM commands.
I tried this:
# rpm -i openssl-0.9.6-9.i386.rpm
The output is:
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
( I am installing this because when I installed the newer version(I believe I already said this) it corrupted a lot of my packages. I believe kpackage was one of these. SOOO....I was hoping that...I could reinstall the older version and find another way of getting the newer version installed. (I wanted the newer version because WINE calls for it. Oh well....
I hope this helps
Tyler-

I'm dying....

Shall we forget about using KPackage, for the moment. If it is broken, then we can come back to it later and fix the program, but right now you want/need to install openssl-0.9.6-9.i386.rpm. Open up a terminal, move to the directory that contains the rpm file, and type rpm -Uvh openssl-0.9.6-9.i386.rpm

Does this work?

Same error-
I typed your command:
rpm -Uvh openssl-0.9.6-9.i386.rpm
As root*
And I still recieved my Segmentation error(core dumped)
I found a file named "core" in the directory of the RPM. There file just contains lots of periods ( . ) strung down the entire lenght of the document...a long ways down the document...like so:
.
.
.
.
.
Confusion once more....I read a RPM tutorial and I didn't derive any life-saving tips from it...so I am now going to look for "core dump" information. Thanks for any help

Sorry, but this sounds like bad news... if you're getting seg errors when using rpm in that manner, it suggests that there's actually a fault with your version of RPM. Try doing something completely benign, like using rpm to query what packages are already installed? If you still get seg errors, then you have a number of options.

You could make backup copies of any vital information/files you need and reinstall from scratch. If you're going to do that, you might want to consider going up a version or two... RH7.1 was notoriously bad!

Reinstalling the RPM util from the install CDs is out of the question since they will be in RPM format, so perhaps you could download the latest version of RPM as source code and install it.

If you're not too fussed on having doing either of those, and you're not likely to be installing any more software (for instance, you're only setting it up as a server), then you could download the source files for openssl and compile these instead of using the rpm files.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Thanks all of you, really....I have gotten more support from people just doing what they like than from I typically get from ANY company that I have ever worked with. I am most likely going to ask my Net Admin for 7.3
I have mounted my Windows drve onto the computer so it won't be bad...I will just transfer all of my installation files onto that drive. Thanks all of you. I have been tracking all of my problems and it seems that I have burned all of my bridges by attempting other methods of repair.
Thank you-
Tyler-
