Hey Repo,
I chatted with Pat Verner, dude at Pmagic.
He says Pmagic has no sound at all...
I thought it should, as they have a flash module for it, just no
sound?!
It says in pmagic docs that it's based on slack 12.2 and you can
add slack pkgs to the pmodules folder and it will "install"
them during boot.
So, I downloaded slack pkgs; alsaoss, esound daemon and libao
and it did in fact install them at boot!
However, still couldn't get it working
I believe, as you say, I need to have it in the kernel?
If so, I would have to recompile it?
thanks repo
OK
I have been playing around a bit with pmagic-hdd-4.3 which is basically the other versions
extracted filesystem.
I put it on my 4gb ext3 usb and succesfully booted and installed slackpkg, sbopkg, and flash-plugin slackbuild!
yeah
so, now I got pmagic with full flash but no Sound!
Tried then to add gcc, but so far No Luck!
It says it installed it but then If I try to install a slackbuild, etc needing GCC
it complains that it's not found?
I need only to install full sound support stereo,
is GCC needed for that?
What exactly do I need to install from slack 12.2 fro sound?
thanks
How/where do I start?
I would have to install them in order, so which one first?
You see, my real idea here is to make slackware-livecd/usb cause pmagic is slack based
and therefore if I remove most of the pmagic stuff/tools and add slack pkg's
it'll be great!
How/where do I start?
I would have to install them in order, so which one first?
I've no idea. I've never done anything like you're doing, you've had more experience of this sort of thing than me. It's like a selective install, having to know what needs what, etc.
My idea is to add/remove everything I want, and then re-create pmagic-hdd into pmagic-usb by re-creating the pmagic.squashfs that is the file system.
You see, I believe pmagic is the key to making slackware livecd/usb because it uses a squashfs
which it loads to ram, and a initrd to autofind usb/hd device.
I have the pmagic-hdd installed to my usb now, which is pmagic-usb with the sqaushfs extracted
as with a reg full install.
This is gonna be a challenge
Pmagic is great candidate to make slack live cause it's already got x (lxde) and many other items, just needs sound!
thanks
Thanks Repo,
however, i don't know where to start...?
Is it easier/better to recompile pmagic's kernel or compile a new kernel?
This is not my forte, so any good ref's not on google would help too.
I have never attempted to compile/re-compile a kernel
so it's like starting over.
thanks
If PartedMagic is Slackware based, then you can probably just compile a new kernel on a Slackware box and create installable packages.
I do this for my laptop, since it is very old: compile the kernel to my laptop's specs on my desktop, then create a kernel package with the makepkg command.
Check the /boot directory of PartedMagic for the kernel config file. Copy it over to the kernel source directory and change it's name to .config
Then just run make xconfig and activate sound support and any other goodies.
