Having trouble with X: starts as root but not as user

Hi all.
When I try to startx as a user it doesn't work, but when I do it as root it works fine.

Here's the error:

Code:
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config"
Using vt 7
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!
(EE) [GLX]: Failed to add GLX extension (NVIDIA XFree86 driver not found)
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Error: No Symbols named "us" in the include file "pc/us"
> Exiting
> Abandoning symbols file "default"
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
Warning: font renderer for ".TTF" already registered at priority 10
Warning: font renderer for ".TTC" already registered at priority 10

waiting for X server to shut down

I'm clueless as to how to fix this. I've been banging my head with it for a few weeks now!

I commented these two lines out to try and stop the errors.

Code:
Section "Module"
        Load "dbe"
        Load "extmod"
        Load "type1"
        Load "speedo"
        Load "freetype"
        Load "xtt"
# Load "glx"
# Load "dri"
EndSection
I still get errors when I try to startx as a user:

Code:
XFree86 Version 4.3.0
Release Date: 27 February 2003
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.20-gentoo-r7 i686 [ELF]

you're running gentoo? how long have you been using linux? ok, those questions were irrelvant, let's get to the issue. the first thing i would try would be to see if /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a was permissable for users and not just root. in case you don't know, the command you want to use is "ls -l". also, it's probably a good idea to un-comment glx and dri.

edit:
oh, you are using an NVIDIA card, right?

Permissions for libdri.a are: -r--r--r--
Is that what you were looking for?

Also, yes I'm using an NVIDIA graphics card. GeForce4 MX 440. I've also been having trouble getting my graphics card drivers to work. I emerged nvidia-kernel but when I altered my XF86Config to use the "nvidia" driver instead of "nv" it didn't work right. Starting X caused a lockup to the point where ctrl-alt-backspace and ctrl-alt-fkey couldnt even save me. Basically about a two seconds after running startx with the nvidia driver, the screen distorts and everything stops. Pressing the reset button is the only alternative.

Although that problem is separate. I'm most concerned with the fact that I have to be root to run X.

Yes, I'm running Gentoo and yes I'm a Linux newbie. I was guided through the install process by a friend, but this is as far as we got. Gentoo's portage system keeps Linux software installation nice and easy for me the newbie. I've found that running on Gentoo, after it's installed that is, is actually easier on me the newbie than trying to run Mandrake or Redhat which don't have very easy methods of software installation.
