In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
this is the error from dmesg:
FAT: bogus logical sector size 0
VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev 07:04.
VFS: Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev ide0(3,6).
What did you do to cause this problem?

Either man fsck to find the options you need, or just force a fsck at the next boot like this: shutdown -Fr now

This tool recovers the partition table.
It's freeware.
testdisk is also standard in the latest Knoppix Live cd.
