Can someone explain how this worked?

I was just playing around on my Slackware box, and i sent an email to my hotmail account from the command line using the 'mail' command. I didnt think it would work or anything, but when I checked my hotmail account a week later, i got an email from root@osiris.example.org... How did that work?

Thanks

well, ur ISP allowed the 'relaying' of your mail (which is from a nonexistent domain).

If you're asking a more fundamental 'how did that work' it's because you have an MTA installed such as exim or sendmail.

If you have a FQDN or even a free service like no-ip you can create your own email addresses.
