i'm going to get an Adsl connection for my own

but, you know, i wanna continue to connect with my mandrake linux

i know there are a lot of situations with adsl under linux

so, there is some little piece of advise to give me anyway

for example, what kind of modem is better to buy?

Personally, I only use an alcatel speedtouch usb because it was part of the deal when I registered with my provider.

I know little or nothing about linux or adsl modems for that matter, but luckily, mandrake 9 supports the alcatel speedtouch "ALMOST" out of the box. You only need to get the microcode from the alcatel/Thomson site, unpack the driver and copy the mgmt.o file into the /usr/share/speedtouch directory.

I will admit that when I first tried mandrake 8.2, it was a bastard to get going, but the ease that I got it up and running under version 9.0 was a breeze.

The other up side, is that I understand that it should be relatively cheap to buy in euroland! (and if like me, you dual boot with window$, it is a "piece of cake" to set up)

p.s. When you get the adsl connection, it doesn't guarantee that everything will be fast, but I have found that most of the time, the speed increase is usually beneficial - though I still have to wait occassionally!

i use the same alcatel with redhat and settinp up was easy

and my speed is enormous MAX 950 kb/sec

It's a safer bet to go for an ethernet modem, USB modems are known to be problematic. As the others above write, the standard Alcatel Speedtouch modem is not difficult to set up, but I got the Speedtouch 330 and that did not work, not even with the driver code from Alcatel.

I know very little about the Madrake Distro, but as far as modems are concerned I would pump for an 'ethernet router' type. It really will be much easier to configure as 'yngwin' mentioned there are considerable problems with configuring USB modems.

I can heartily reccomend the D-Link DSL-500. A very good modem/router that is configurable through a web interface. Their tech support isn't bad either - no calls to the US

The modem throughput is up to 8Mbs - not that you will ever reach that dizzy height, but nice that it's there eh!

I didn't say yes yet.

They said to me i could get it work propely for linux recompiling the kernel. But i'm not sure if i got to believe that or not.

Does someone have experienced with that?

I must admit, that when I first got my speedtouch usb modem it was the one that came with the connection contract.

I was lucky that it is supported by the distro's that I have tried. As previously mentioned I had a hard time when configuring it for 8.2, but 9.0 was easy. My brother (IT professional/linux nut!) configured it for me for SuSE 8.

When I was trying to configure it for mandy 8.2 quite a few people said that I should have gone for the router/modem option, but as I say, it came with the adsl contract.

You could try and search for the modem that "they" are offering to see if there is any problems getting it configured.

yngwin is correct in saying that there usb modems have been "problematic" though it seems that most of the improvement in usb has sorted that out. Though I can't say whether that is "distro specific" or not.

I can only go by personal experience, and the model that I mentioned in my first post is DEFINITELY supported in mandrake 9.0, though I couldn't say whether you would have problems when trying other distro's - though I understand that it run's ok with redhat.

It's fair to say that these "desktop type" distro's are fairly helpful when it comes to configuring stuff - I don't know how difficult it would be when/if you try slackware or debian???

Ethernet is the best, I don't know why everyone in the windows world thinks usb is the greatest. It's simply not true. Ethernet is better. I know someone dealing with a windows problem with a usb modem now, tech support told him that he needed to upgrade to a newer version of windows to keep from getting a blue screen.

As far as speed goes someone is going to have to do some explaining if I'm gonna believe that a 10Mb ethernet card will slow down a 1Mb internet connection.

I have a cable modem connection which I frequently see downloading at 250+ KB. From one system to another on an ethernet LAN the speed is much higher, so there is no way usb can give you a faster internet connection.


Basically I don't care what operating system your going to use with it. Ethernet is better.

I'm not sure, my cable modem is capable of 5Mb / sec The provider says they have download of 1.5 Mb. but as I said I see it download over 250 KB sometimes and that's 2Mb / sec


The modem is not the limiting factor in usb or ethernet.



The 3mb / sec may be a max, depending on where you are.


Where are you getting your kernel from, The most I can get from kernel.org is about 160 KB

hey david, I get my kernel from kernel.org, and goes about 350K/sec, in my cable modem...which is probably the fastest I've downloaded in a cable modem...maybe one time it went up to 390...but I can't really recall.

Anyway, jetfreggel...no you are not getting speeds of 950K/sec in your DSL modem from your DSL provider. DSL from any dsl provider pretty much tops out at 200k'sec. And that's only in special cases...most of the time it's 150k/sec. I have cable at my home and dsl in my apartment.
And anyway, cable is faster than DSL by a long shot.

Also...SuperSadSmile...say NO to them...tell them to give you an Ethernet modem like David said...and you'll save lots of headaches. Maybe for some people it's easy to install the USB modem...but the foolproof install it is indeed an Ethernet modem.
Tell them that you need an Ethernet modem because your USB connections don't work. They have to give you one that is Ethernet then.

yes, I can believe 1150 Kb. That's about 144 KB

I think the fastest I've ever seen here is about 280 KB, which is 2293 Kb.

It really depends on if your talking bits (b) or bytes (B).
