i havent gotten wine working at all. even though i use winex3.1. it doesnt work when i run it with any windoze binary (although it does install programs). i dont know why. when i run it from the konsole, it gives me a pid, a tid, hangs for a while, then exits. that was a waste of 30$. i havent gotten it to work.

ah!! Windows withdrawal! Max Payne 2 and Commandos 3 are coming out October 15th! Obviously they only come out for Windows!
This is the only reason I will not delete my Windows.

LavaDevil94 - looks like you should call the ISP - that's rediculous - if you run ping test are you getting packets dropped? does the connection drop at a certain time of day?

I had that problem with one game - didn't try any others that was enough for me.
It was caused by the fact, that the game still needed to access the cd after it was installed but for some reason couldn't.Me thinks it was a protection thing.

i would talk to my isp, but im waiting for dsl from someone who has been promising it for 2 years and hasnt delivered because its not "financially viable". btw, about mtn net (my isp) i dont think theyd listen. school has convinced me that noone (except you guys ) will listen to a 12-years old. and it does drop me after 9 hours constant connection and at about 6:12 AM.

LavaDevil94 - here's what you do:

If you call them they HAVE to do something about it.
Keep asking [politely] for their second level techs. [tell 1st level tech it is nothing personal but you need 2nd level/supervisor ]. Repeat if necessary.

things you can do to pin point the issue before calling:
Run a constant ping to www.yahoo.com - check if the packets start timing out at any time. [if so this is called packet loss]
In a console type:
ping www.yahoo.com
[let it run for 5 mins - ctrl and C will stop it when your done].
Check for synchronization on the modem when it drops you - does the dsl light go out or start blinking? [ if so then this is intermittant synch - Call 'em and ask for a line ticket ].

Call them with the results [if any] and ask for a "rip and rebuild" [take it out and put it back in] of YOUR configuration in THEIR router.

If they try to brush you off - ask them can they do it anyway if he tries to tell you there is nothing wrong - if he can't do it ask to be escalated to the techs who can. Repeat if necessary. Always try to be polite.

Rip and rebuilds will fix alot of these type issues.

yeah you said it starts about 6:12 pm

- are the lights coming on in the area?
- any cars pull up to their drive ways when dsl goes out?

this may sound strange but if the cables are running under peoples driveways the electro magnetics can be a problem. Fans, flourescant lights - anything electro-magnetic can cause problems.

Back to the topic.

Best free games for linux are in my opinion Nethack and Angband (I recommend the TOME varient of Angband www.t-o-m-e.com). But if you dont like games with no grafix I completely understand and in that case you should try VegaStrike (vegastrike.sourceforge.net).

If you're looking for bad ass commercial games that run native in linux just play UT2003 thats the best game ever.

BTW LavaDevil. Give winex3 a chance again. I think you'll find that you didnt waist that money. What you need is the no cd patch for the game you were trying to play and it will probably run great.

Just because you get a no-cd crack does not mean it's warez. You have the original game and you are trying to get it to work on your linux! So if you grab the no-cd crack, then it will bypass looking for the CD and it may work in your linux with WineX. I can suggest you a site but I will not publicly post it as it may be against forum rules. private message me and I'll let you know if you're interested.
