gtk themes won't change

Basically, I've tried creating a .gtkrc file in my home directory, used gnome-theme-manager, gtk-chtheme, switch2 and they all fail to change/keep my gtk theme I select. I'm at my wit's end.

Everything was working until I installed gtk-engines-qt, which apparently doesn't work with beryl as it makes it crash at load and the systray icon never loads. The gentoo wiki recommended using gtk-chtheme to switch between using a qt theme and other gtk themes, which I think is the reason it messed everything up. Somebody please help, this is pissing me off.

I've tried gtk-qt-engines before. But some time gtk program look ugly. And even i can't use xfce control panel to change gtk theme. It's alway crashed when i do that.
And I think config file for gtk+-2.0 is .gtkrc-2.0. May be it can help.
