Error installing Linux (any distro) on Athlon X2 system

I am unable to install any distro of Linux with a 2.6 kernel on my Athlon X2 system. It keeps telling me the following error.
Kernel panic - not synching: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the 'noapic' option.
This error is received while loading the installation process right after I press enter to choose the default installer setup after initial boot from CD.

Code:
[ sylvester :: cam ]-> cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep name
model name	: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+
model name	: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+
I can assure you the problem is not with your CPU Try using the noapic option when booting from the installer CD and see if it helps. Different CDs are different but most should show (however briefly) a short instruction on how to add kernel parameters.

I'm also getting the same error. Does anyone know how to correct it? How do I change kernel parameters in Ubuntu 6.06 ?
