Linux distro for Athlon XP-M notebooks, which is best?
Hi all,
I have a (shudder) Packard Bell EasyNote E3 notebook, which i purchased about a year ago. I'd like to know what distro works best without any messing about with an AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ Barton cpu? I had mandrake on it a while ago, and i couldn't get powermanagement to work properly, the system got very hot very quick and was very noisy, the fan wouldn't turn off, and also i had a problem with 3D Graphics not working properly either.
I heard that i had to recompile the kernel or something for the PowerNow feature to work, but being a complete Noobie, i dont know how to go about doing that.
My specs are:
AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ CPU
512MB DDR266 RAM
VIA KN266 Chipset Mainboard
32MB S3 ProSavage DDR Graphics
40Gb ATA133 Hard Drive
Realtek ALC201 Audio
DVD/CDRW Drive
15" TFT Screen
If anyone recommends anything then i'd really appreciate it.
I was going to recommend you to look in the LQ hardware compatibility list but sadly there isn't an entry for Packard Bell's perhaps if you decide to prceed and install Linux, you could post an entry to the HCL and to the above sites to help others decide.
For the purposes of hardware detection and ease of use, I would recommend MEPIS Linux its a live cd which means you can test it without destroying any partitions and if you are happy with it there is also an install function.
Thank you for the quick response to my post. I'm downloading the 2004 b05 cd, its only a single disc but the 2003 ver10 is two disc. Is that correct??
It looks pretty cool... Did you have any problems with the install or configure?

Hi madhatteruk,
yes the 2003.10 is the last stable version and has 2 disks crammed with apps,
and the 2004.b05 is one of the last betas before the new release.
(BTW beta 5 is very stable) and as enough of the mainsream linux apps to let you do what you need.
MEPIS is that easy to install and configure it makes windows look hard.
It really is a cool distro.. absolutely everything you need on one disc.. everything works brilliantly including powermanagement, except can't get the LCD refresh rates right, the generic drivers dont work!
