Hello, long time linux user here.

I just got my current dream machine:

athlon64 3000+
1gb pc3200 DDR
Asus K8V-X
Geforce FX 5900XT
200gb western digital ata-100
120gb seagate ata-100
Pioneer 105 dvd-rw
pioneer 16x dvd-rom

I usually run gentoo, however, this is my first 64-bit processor, so I'm not sure which distro to run... it will be dual booted with winxp sp2. please help? not going to be used as a server except for small things, might run personal mail and web server, maybe ssh, don't know. definitely want 3d to work (after all, didn't shell out that much money for a geforce fx for no reason )

Gentoo should work fine as long as the kernel is recompiled for the 64-bit processor. But remember, the 64-bitness of the processor is only used with apps specifically built for 64-bit.

In terms of which distro to choose, the best advice I can offer is to try several, then decide for yourself which one best suits your needs and preferences.
