Why haven't we broken Windows monopoly yet?

-
The question is simple: "why haven't we broken Windows monopoly yet?"

The answers should also be simple...

What are you going to do, plaster this board with your comments like this? Could you please either post something constructive, give us your answer to your problem (since this is a questions forum, you have the answer, yet do not want to give it?), or at least post this in a more relevant place than "Linux - Newbie"?

Thank you.

All I want is to have a discussion on the subject.. Ask what other people think.. Have a feedback..

Is there anything wrong in wanting to start a debate?

If this is so, please tell me if I could have a debate anywhere else on this forum..

I had a first try locked, telling me I was in the wrong forum..
So I change forums and I am given another reason.....

I mean, I am not doing anything wrong by wanting to have a debate I hope.. Is it against your rules and regulations?

-------------------------

Master C, Do you know what a debate is?

Besides, if you are not interested in entering a debate and giving you opinion, well this is your choice... Noone is forcing you to enter this subject!

The problem is that you aren't starting a debate. Why not give your views first.

No no no, it's just that your first 3 posts are just that, causing a debate or worse, a heated discussion that will eventually turn into no more than a flame war.

You are more than welcome to ask any questions you'd like, simply try to ask them in the the most appropriate forum. If you do wish to simply start a debate, you might pose that in your question.

Just so you know, there is an amazingly large thread on "Y use linux over windows" that probably already debates all this. You could read that for info if that's what you desire.

Also, a lot of people believe that it's not a battle. Linux isn't out to "win" against MS. It simply is another (more) viable option for (many) people to choose from when selecting (a better) OS.

Cool

Good answer David..

The problem is -in all modesty- that I always have very convincing arguments and whenever I post them I always get a lot of yeahs yeahs..

In the end, I am like talking to myself with no feedback..

And I am not interested in my opinions.. I know them.. I know them by heart... I want other people's opinions...

Yet, I will tell you my point of view afterwards.. But first I would like some comments...

Master C,

I am a newbie here but a veteran in other forums..

Never ever a subject I have started ever led to a war of any sort..

I started a Middle-East conversation between Arabs and Jews in another forum and noone was ever out of line... And that is a hot subject...

Believe me! I am a very constructive person and I am not looking for a war! I am looking for constructive comments and I usually get constructive comments..

So you should not worry!

Besides yes I will rephrase my question not using words like win/lose/battle: why don't more people use Linux as their main OS?

This should have been in Linux-General or even General, maybe a mod could move it.

Linux, per se, is not a business. It is a community and a kernel. Red Hat, Mandrake and Lindows are businesses - it is up to them to try to break the monopoly, if they wish to do so. The real problem for them is scale. If you were to start your own pc business would you think it possible to outdo Dell or HP? Of course not, they are huge multi-million dollar companies and you would not be.

As far as the flame vs. debate issue - if you pose a question and do not state your view it can be looked at as a flame or troll. If you had continued your post and said "my view is..." then all would be aware that a debate was wanted. If we cannot see what your view is, how can we debate it?

Surely your post would have been better written as: "I believe that Linux should be able to break the Windows monopoly. My reasons are: ...... What do you think?"

there are already MANY debates on this site if you try to look. Why don't you go find a thread such as "Y use Linux instead of windows", read it *all* and then post on that if you feel you have somethign to add on top of the existing 650 posts there.

Hmm, looking over my posts and those above, I think that this thread may turn into a debate about what a debate is and how it should be conducted.

Maybe Jeremy could start a Debates forum....?!

Cool, you don't have to convince me, I'm just a user like you

So, where do the beatings begin

Why hasn't linux broken windows monopoly...

So do you want arguments for Linux to break it, or do you want arguments on why MS is such a hard rival?

I'm going to take the this stance:
Linux doesn't want to. The ability is there, the knowledge is there, even the masses are there, all if it wanted to be. However, linux does what it does, as it wants to, just as it's users want it to, and really (the veteran crowd as a whole) I'd have to say don't care one way or the other what MS does as long as it does not hinder what Linux does.

More and more each day/month/year knowledgable users turn to linux. So over time, regardless of marketing schemes, you are bound to find that users migrate to, what they feel, is better. Whether that be win or linux.

Cool

You guys really don't get my point...

I am not asking you the differences between Linux and Windows.. I am simply asking you: why don't more people use Linux?

Is a very factual question that deserves a very factual answer...

Perhaps at this stage I will formulate my question differently seen from a different perspective: why doesn't 90/95% of the population switch to Linux?

Are there reasons for them not to?

They do. More and more everyday.

Marketing, commercials, default OS, these are all factors contributing why "not everyone" uses linux. That amongst the fact that people simply prefer windows. No biggie. To each their own, and choice is one of the best things linux has ever given to us geeks

OK Put even differently...

If you were to ask people why they don't switch to Linux (which is a much better OS than W) what would most people reply?
