Lightbulb what ways could linux play a role in saving the world?

maybe this thread's just a bit of fun, or maybe it could find the most important thing(s)

what ways could linux play a role in saving the world

like, in managing the maneuvering thrusters on the giant solar cell satelites that simultaneously protect our greenhouse-effect poluted planet from excess sun rays and also collect more energy, closer to the sun, then beam that energy back to us, or to other stations, vessels, planets in the system that need more power beamed at them, and can suitably recieve the energy in some form that can be transmitted, the frequencies of which would also be managed by linux.

yeah, think big silly and wild if you like... that's kinda what save the world idea need be by definition. ...and/or pick ways it already does.

what ways could linux play a role (little or large) in saving the world?

... feel free to suitably supplant "Free Software" for "linux" there.
(or just mean the kernel. your choice.)

Hi...

I think it's important to note here that the world as we now know it will end at a point in the future when Jesus Christ returns to set up the Millennial Kingdom. At this point, life on Earth will be very different than it is now.

With that in mind, I think there are ways Linux can currently help the world. Although efforts of this nature have already been started, I'm thinking of computers in third world nations (that are installed with a distribution of Linux) that can be used in schools and Churches to teach children not only the usual subjects (reading, math, science, etc.,) and the Bible but also subjects that might be very difficult or impossible to learn due to financial constraints and other issues. I'm thinking of programs like OpenSCAD or FreeCAD that could assist with this, as an example. Using Linux and open source software, I think, will continue to allow folks in these areas (of the world) to be able to better afford computer technology, perhaps even newer technology.

Regards...

Fixed that for you. I find the notion that we shouldn't be trying to save humankind from the ramifications of our doing because one religion predicts that somewhere in the future all will be fixed by a god rather frightening, since it implies that we can just continue the same way as we do now (polluting the planet, waging wars, ...) and don't have to be held accountable for that.

I guess it depends what you classify as saving the world.

Already raised was the religious principle.

I do take the original post to mean 'how to help the world situation with respect too ... environmental disaster, asteroid impact, global warming, thermonuclear MAD, terrorism, .... other ... alien invasion "

I think Linux is already in use a lot for a lot of products. I think overall it's up to people to decide and invent things along the lines where we try to collaborate together versus however we behave now.

I would like to see linux computers around the world find and delete every piece of privacy data that google, MS, and the NSA have collected.

No, I know that.

The ramifications you're speaking of are the result of sin and that can't be dealt with until one realizes they are a sinner and sees that Jesus Christ is the solution to it.

What you mentioned could not be further from the truth. As an example, the things that happen to mankind prior to Jesus coming back are a result of God's judgement of man's sin. Please see here. This is not counting the Great White Throne Judgement, which happens later. There is no get out of jail free card, we're all accountable for the sins we commit.

While what the Lord prophesied in Scripture will come true, it doesn't mean that we can or should just sit and do nothing. For those who are Christians, we're still called to love and serve others. As an example, in the Church (or the body of Christ,) there are all kinds of active ministries that work in different areas, such as famine and disaster relief, orphanages, addictions, etc. And there are many secular organizations who help with the same things. God still greatly cares what goes on in the world and shows it every day.

Regards...

It is as always...
If the world is defined as the environment that human beings live in and seek happiness, then it is your and my responsibility to protect as much of it as we can. The pressure may be alleviated by some amount of cooperation or at least benevolence. The tools that you try to deploy in the process, those that you deem appropriate and those that you lay aside as less adapted to the task, must be diverse.

Whether Linux plays a role or not, depends on so many things, that other tools should be considered more universal. My own direct response to the original question would be identical those I give to these, just all at once:
What is good in Linux?”.
When do you see Linux at its best?”.
Which situation will not benefit from our access to a Linux-system and which will?”.
Who and why?”.

Linux will not help to turn useless overpaid western government leaders into well-meaning hard-working servants to their people. It will not turn cudgel swinging ruffians into considerate protectors of public freedom. But that too, must be accomplished one day, and long before we can start out to “save the world” or whatever ...

Linux is only a tool like so many man has created over the thousands of years. It is no different than a wheel, stick, rock or bomb. All can be used for good and all can be used for evil. It is foolish to believe that Linux could be any more or any less helpful in the course we are headed toward.

A FREE-GPL saves us from that "evil" perpetuated from silly books, horny rabbits ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and fairy tales*** Linux is not one way or another meat based, that's good!

Add: plus, saves my (virtual) world now!

Well. I wish I had the skills and money and funds and time and manpower to set up a raspberry pi to control a local garden and well irrigation system on my property with a motor wind powered and solar panels to power the pi and have the pi also work my Mexican still water system.
While lighting my M/C shop and powering my tools.

With a motorized wheeled robot to do any heavy gear moving, well drilling, for me, instead of throwing my back out once every few weeks.

It won't save the whole world. Just mine locally.

But wishes and money are like air in the wind. No Lotto for me. So I just deal with what I have.

GNU/Linux PLC controllers might be the future on water distillery plants converting sea water to potable water. Using the Sun for Heat. http://www.motherearthnews.com/real-...z02aszgoe.aspx So that will save the world some what.

Just imagine the link on miles and miles of acreage on a grander scale.

Edit: You can tell I don't give 2 cents for politics or computer surveillance or religious airy fairy judgments that jesus never mentioned anything about. Must be the country boy in me.

You know if you and the rest of the theists were really about love for your fellow man, you would be kind enough to leave the rest of us out of your apocalypse. Instead you seem to be trying to pull us all in. Just sayin, seems at the very least, rude.

Clockworks of blood and impulses... forming groups and sometimes ☢nukes!☢

Hardware can live longer than greed would like. Imagine every dime on SW going to the world, what would that end? I like that GPLs are trending towards HW...

There is no need, nor possibility, of saving the world. It will exist until the sun goes nova, and then it will be destroyed. Nothing can be done about that. Civilization, OTOH, could use some help, and its continued existence is not at all certain. If the global average temperature keeps rising, the fate of civilization, indeed all of humankind, is in doubt. If we could find a way to reverse that, it would be a very good thing, and perhaps Linux could be used as a tool.
