View Poll Results: What is Music? (Poll added on 6th of May 2012).
seems we're on an ethno-streak right now...
i used to have some cool stuff in my collection, let's see...
unfortunately the term "ethno" or "world music" is so vague, it's really difficult to draw the line and i could include a third of my CDs...
anyhow: Värttinä - Seelinnikoi (*) Zeleni Vínecek (Bittova) Hedningarna - Tuuli
seems i like female singers...
all of this stuff is at least 10 years old. i wonder what happens to this genre these days.
(*) god how i used to love this band.
their first two albums were decidedly more "folk" than "ethno". their second album was their breakthrough, and imo it's the very best.
Thank you BrianL I've long been a huge Stones fan and while I think they were at the top of their game w/ Mick Taylor, I still dug 'em after. However I saw one recent video that made me think it might possibly be time to "hang up their rock 'n roll shoes".... that is until I saw this video you linked.. Those boys are still hot 'n nasty and refuse to go down without a whole lotta fight.
BTW to m.a.l.'s pa, "Jazz" is one terrific series. Ken Burns is always excellent but that one seems a cut above. Truly a heartfelt special documentary experience of extreme personal and soulful importance. I find it spectacularly beautiful from opening credits to the finish... absolutely mesmerizing.

I did watch some of that documentary, on PBS, but that was a long time ago, don't remember much about it. The 5-CD set I have now is music only. Excellent.

Indeed, in academia the 'ethno' in 'ethnomusicology' purely refers to any music which is not from the West. As for world music, it would be more accurate to describe worlds musics. But yes, I used it as a catch-all term to give a general feel to what I'm describing here.
The first and third artist I'm aware of, not the second. I'll give it a listen.

You're not alone. From about 2002 to 2006 I listened only to female vocal metal, and female vocal music in general, I think. That changed after I discovered the male-fronted progressive metal band Fates Warning.

"Pestilent Grief"?
One can only wonder...
Sometimes I very pestilently grieve the beans I ate the night before...

me, still nostalgic. early nineties, when i seriously started getting into "independent" music (or at least what the definition of the term meant back then).
I was thinking which song i would choose to convince someone of how good this album is, and what makes it special.
can't - every song stands out in its own special way - but don't miss the Beatles cover.
some boring music becomes less boring with each listening. that's genius.
PS: special mention for 4AD's artwork. wow. that was long before photoshop.
